Turkish Press Silent on KESK trials

On the 4th October 2012, 69 KESK members and administrators stood on trial for alleged membership of the KCK (link). For the occasion, a international mission of observers from different international union federations travelled to Ankara to join the first hearings. Several union confederations wrote official complaint letters and sent them to the Turkish government:

  • Federación de Trabajadores de la Enseñanza Comisión Ejecutiva Federal (Spain): link
  • EPSU, PSI & ITUC letter of support: link
  • Unión Sindical Obrera (Spain): link
  • IHD, PI, EPSU, and others: link
  • FNV (Holland): link

Moreover, a press conference was organized by KESK and the international mission to get attention for the KESK trials and to get popular support against the oppression of the labour movement in Turkey.

Notwithstanding the international attention for the issue, the two main English spoken journals of Turkey (Today’s Zaman & Hurriyet Daily News) didn’t report the issue in their daily. Of course, the military tensions between Turkey and Syria took up most of the space in the Turkish newspapers these days. Nevertheless, it seems that Turkish unionism is not considered a topic of interest by the redactions of the English spoken newspapers in Turkey.
